LOOKOUT Republishing Guidelines

Thanks for your interest in republishing LOOKOUT’s journalism. We believe deeply in getting accurate, accountable LGBTQ+ reporting in front of as many people as possible—so yes, you can republish our work for free.

All LOOKOUT stories are published under a Creative Commons CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license unless otherwise noted. That means you can share our work with proper credit, for noncommercial purposes, and without altering the substance of the reporting.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Credit LOOKOUT and the reporter

You must clearly credit both LOOKOUT and the author(s).

Preferred format:
By [Reporter Name], LOOKOUT

2. Link back to the original story

If you’re publishing online, include a link at the top of the article that says:

All republished stories need to have a link back. We recommend the following:
This story was originally published by LOOKOUT, an independent nonprofit digital and print news outlet focused on accountability journalism for the Southwest's LGBTQ+ community. Visit their website here.

  • Hyperlink “Visit their website here” to our homepage or the original story link.

3. Don’t materially edit the reporting

You can:

  • Adjust for style (AP, house style, etc.)
  • Update references to time (e.g., “this week” → “last week”)
  • Trim for length

You cannot:

  • Change the meaning, framing, or conclusions of the story
  • Add or remove context in a way that alters accuracy

If you want to make substantive edits, you must get approval from LOOKOUT, email editor@lookoutnews.org.

4. Headlines and presentation

You may adapt headlines and subheads to fit your style, but they must remain accurate and not misrepresent the reporting.

5. Photos, graphics, and illustrations

  • You may use LOOKOUT images and graphics only with the stories they originally appeared in
  • Do not alter captions or credits
  • Some images may not be licensed for reuse—when in doubt, check with us or use your own

6. Don’t sell the story

  • You cannot sell LOOKOUT stories or republish them for direct commercial gain
  • The story must not be behind a paywall.
  • You may place them on pages that include ads or within a subscription product

7. Social sharing

If you share the story on social media:

  • Tag LOOKOUT where possible
  • On Instagram or Facebook, feel free to invite us as a collaborator

8. Don’t republish everything

We’re glad you’re here—but please don’t systematically republish all of our work. We want to maintain the integrity and sustainability of our newsroom.

9. Excerpts, quotes, and translations

  • Excerpts: You can publish a portion of the story with a link back to the full piece
  • Quotes: Allowed with proper attribution and link
  • Translations: Require prior approval

10. When in doubt, ask

If you’re unsure about edits, images, or usage, reach out. We’re happy to work with partners who respect the reporting and the communities we cover.
