Earlier this month, a federal court ruled that victims and family members of those killed in the 2022 Club Q shooting in Colorado Springs did not have standing to continue a lawsuit against the state or the bar’s owner over safety measures that could have potentially prevented a gunman from killing five people and injuring dozens more.
But the Club Q shooting changed how queer spaces across Colorado think about safety, and who is responsible for providing it.
We speak with Alec Berg, an independent journalist who wrote for LOOKOUT about what LGBTQ+ spaces across Colorado have done since the shooting, and the bigger question his reporting raises: Who is tasked with keeping the queer community safe in their gathering places?
