LOOKOUT Named LION Business of the Year at 2026 Independent News Sustainability Summit

SAN DIEGO — LOOKOUT was named LION Business of the Year in the micro/small revenue tier at the 2026 LION Publishers Sustainability Awards, announced September 10, 2026 at the Independent News Sustainability Summit in San Diego.

The award is LION’s top recognition for a member newsroom that has made significant progress toward sustainability across operational resilience, financial health, and journalistic impact. Fifty-eight LION member finalists were honored across 10 categories, with 17 newsrooms taking home awards.

LOOKOUT was recognized for reporting that led to the release of a transgender woman from ICE detention and for accountability coverage of local institutions, alongside the infrastructure that made that work possible: the newsroom’s first two full-time hires, standardized employment policies, employer-paid benefits, and expanded reader support.

“LOOKOUT clearly demonstrates that it is not simply reacting to growth opportunities but instead approaching expansion in a highly pragmatic, researched, and disciplined way,” the LION judging panel wrote. “The evidence provided throughout the application and supporting documentation reflects an organization that understands how to balance mission-driven journalism with the realities of building a durable business model.”

The recognition comes as LOOKOUT expands its footprint. The newsroom recently launched coverage in Colorado and plans to continue growing across the desert Southwest, including New Mexico, Utah, Nevada, and the California desert — a region where LGBTQ+ communities are spread across small cities and rural areas with few dedicated news outlets of their own.

“The journalism we produce is something I'm proud of every single day. But this award is about something even bigger than that," said Jake Hylton, Executive Director of LOOKOUT. "It's about whether we're building something that lasts. Our communities don't need a newsroom that shows up for one big moment, builds some trust, then disappears. They need one that's still here in five years, in ten years, telling people their stories matter before the next crisis hits and the next person needs someone in their corner. What we're doing right now is great. But it's the people we're doing it for who we have to protect. This award tells me we're figuring out how to make that happen.” 

Founded in 2022, LOOKOUT has quickly become the Southwest’s leading LGBTQ+ nonprofit newsroom, producing investigative, accountability and service journalism focused on the issues shaping LGBTQ+ life. The newsroom covers politics, health, education, public safety and culture while connecting readers with resources and community across Arizona.
